Being a handicap tournament, all participants have a fair chance of exhibiting their putting prowess in the individual category while organisers will ensure that the 25 participating teams will be as equally matched as possible.

Some of the stars who have confirmed their presence and are likely to be team captains are Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Tony Greig, Madhavan, Geet Sethi, Nafisa Joseph, Feroze Gujral and the country''s leading lady golfer Shruti Khanna.

Addressing the media at a premier hotel in the city on Thursday, Kapil said that he has lent his full fledged support to the tournament, the receipts from which will be donated to the Champs Foundation of which Sunil Gavaskar is a director and trustee. The other trustees are Sunil''s wife, Marshniel, brother-in-law Gundappa Vishwanath, Khalid Ansari and Nana Chudasama.

For the past four years, Champs Foundation has been providing a monthly stipend of Rs 3,000 to the following needy Indian sportspersons of yesteryear: Premjit Lall, Gopal Bhengra, Sami Khatow, Krishna D Gaikwad, Salim Durrani and A. Palaniswamy. The organisation, whose main aim is to provide a helping hand to needy sports personalities, also footed the bill for Wilson Jones during his illness.

"Sunil is doing a great job and I feel privileged to be a part of an event which can help such a foundation,'' said Kapil Dev. On a lighter note, Kapil added that he is one of the many men who go a long way to watch India''s leading lady golfer, Shruti Khanna, swing her club and long hair. "She is pretty as well as talented, - a rare combination,'' said Dev before handing over the microphone to the lissome golfer.

Shruti, for her part, thanked the sponsors (McDowell''s) for promoting such a sporing extravaganza which should go a long way in popularising the game of golf among young boys and girls.

Ferrari furore

Not one to refrain from speaking out his mind on any controversial topic, Kapil Dev said that he was happy for Sachin Tendulkar for being gifted with a Ferrari but lambasted the government for maintaining two sets of standards.

"Will the government agree to waive a duty of Rs one crore for any other leading sports personality of the country, such as Vishwanathan Anand or Dhanraj Pillay? Reduction of the duty by a small percentage may have been tolerated by the tax paying public but definitely not waiving the entire amount. Rules and norms should be the same for all bona fide Indian nationals,'' said the living legend of Indian cricket.
